What is Terminology Extraction?
Terminology extraction is the process of automatically identifying and collecting terms and phrases that are specific to a particular domain or subject area from a body of text. These terms are crucial for maintaining consistency and accuracy in translations. The extraction tool helps in creating a comprehensive glossary of terms that can be used across various translation projects to ensure uniformity.
Why Would You Want to Extract Terminology?
Extracting terminology is essential for several reasons:
- Efficiency: Saves time and effort for translators by providing a ready-made glossary, reducing the need for constant reference checks and revisions.
- Cost-Effective: Minimizes the need for extensive reviews and corrections, thereby lowering the overall cost of translation projects.
- Consistency: Ensures that specific terms are translated the same way across all documents, which is vital for maintaining the integrity and clarity of the content.
- Quality: Improves the overall quality of translations by reducing the likelihood of errors and inconsistencies.

Step 2: Setting Up Your Extraction Project
1. After clicking “Terms Extraction”, a window titled Terminology Extraction will open.
2. Under the Extraction tab, you will find two dropdown fields labeled “Source files” and “Target files”, each with an “UPLOAD FILES” button underneath. Note that the “START ALIGNMENT” button is not enabled yet.
Step 3: Selecting Languages and Uploading Files
1. Select the source and target languages for your extraction project. The source language is the language of your original content, while the target language is the language of your translated content.
Please note that the documents do not have to be translations of the same content, and they can have different formats. Additionally, you can upload a different number of source and target languages.
2. Once you have selected your source and target languages, upload the corresponding files by clicking on the “UPLOAD FILES” buttons. For example, if your source language is English, upload files in English that are relevant to your project. If your target language is Polish, upload files in Polish that correspond to the same domain or subject matter. These files do not have to be direct translations of each other but should be related in context. You can upload multiple files if needed.
